Hallo Welt! in Brussels at FOSDEM 2025
BlueSpice showcases AI and collaborative editing
In 2025, the open source community will once again gather in the European capital on the first weekend of February: On February 1st and 2nd, almost 10,000 nerds, hackers, programmers, users and visionaries from the world of free software will meet at FOSDEM at the Université Libre de Brusseles to talk about developments, ideas, collaborations and solutions.
As always, admission is free and it will be packed – including the program with hundreds of first-class presentations. We will also be there: Hallo Welt! will be helping to shape the Developer Room “Collaboration and Content Management” with two contributions. We will be dealing with the topics of real-time editing / collaborative editing in MediaWiki and AI in wikis.
Working together and simultaneously on documents – in a MediaWiki environment
Collaborative editing in real time (known from Etherpad, Google Documents or Microsoft 365) is becoming increasingly popular and has become the standard in many places. Users enjoy the benefits, for example because editing conflicts can be reduced or minutes can be written more quickly and easily before and during meetings. Many other examples show how real-time editing is now a standard requirement in the workplace. A modern visual editor has become an absolute must since user expectations have changed (also thanks to Google Docs and Confluence). And the open source world faces the challenge of keeping pace.
BlueSpice provides a real-time editor for Wikipedia
That’s why Hallo Welt! decided to extend the Wikimedia VisualEditor with real-time editing for the MediaWiki distribution BlueSpice. The result is a freely available, 100% open-source solution for real-time editing based on the most popular wiki software. Our presentation provides an initial, and critical, field report. We will show the technical problems we have encountered, report on use cases and initial experiences and the effects on knowledge exchange with wikis. Some things had to be redefined, particularly in terms of version control and responsibility. But we are convinced that the effort was worth it!
A wiki as a common place of collaboration for humans and artificial agents?
Wikis are a place where people work together to store and improve knowledge. They are characterized by the free representation of knowledge in natural language that can be easily stored and retrieved by people. Increasingly, they also serve as a knowledge base for chatbots and other artificial agents based on LLMs and their technologies. But today’s AI can do even more: interacting with people in a chat is one thing, but modern AI agents can also “acquire” new knowledge. In this talk, we will present how wikis can be developed into a (storage) location where AI agents can store this information – readable for both humans and the agents themselves. This would make the wiki a perfect place for collaboration between humans and AI.
We are looking forward to Brussels, FOSDEM, all the talks on all kinds of open source and other topics and send a big thank you! to the organizations who make something great happen here every year!
