Atlassian is discontinuing Data Center products.
What does this mean for Confluence users?
24. September 2025
Atlassian has announced that it will completely discontinue its Data Center products, including Confluence Data Center, by March 2029. This decision affects numerous companies that have relied on locally operated Atlassian solutions to date. The switch to alternatives is therefore inevitable for many organizations. We have compiled the most important facts, timelines, and risks for you here and provide recommendations for migration.
Contrary to previous statements, Atlassian is now consistently pursuing a cloud-centric strategy. The further development and long-term support of on-premises solutions such as Confluence Data Center will be discontinued. Among other things, Atlassian cites the predominant use of the cloud by existing customers and potential savings through centralized hosting as reasons for this decision.
Farewell to Confluence Data Center: The official roadmap
Atlassian will focus entirely on cloud-based offerings in the future. Support and sales of the Data Center versions will be phased out gradually. A detailed schedule has already been drawn up for the EoL of Confluence Data Center. This schedule allows companies to make informed migration decisions and introduce alternatives in good time.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| December 16, 2025 | No more new data center apps in the Atlassian Marketplace |
| March 30, 2026 | License purchases and new subscriptions no longer possible for new customers |
| March 30, 2028 | Discontinuation of all sales activities for existing customers |
| March 28, 2029 | Final end: Operation only in read-only mode |
Risks and challenges posed by the end of support
Following the end of life of Confluence Data Center, the switch to read-only mode poses significant risks that companies should not ignore:
1. Compliance-Problems
- Compliance with standards such as ISO 27001 or KRITIS is no longer guaranteed.
- Unpatched software leads to audit risks and possible action by regulatory authorities.
2. Data protection risks
- Content containing personal data can no longer be modified or deleted.
- There is a risk of a potential violation of the GDPR.
3. Operational risks
- Security vulnerabilities due to missing updates and outdated add-ons.
- No scaling options, lack of support in case of malfunctions.
- Internal processes that depend on processability are blocked.
4. Increase in costs
- Switching to Atlassian’s cloud model can result in significant additional costs—in many cases, over 50% more per year.
- Example price development when switching to Atlassian Cloud.
| Number of users | Data Center (yearly) | Cloud Premium | Price Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | $ 32,000 | $ 43,275 | +16 % |
| 1,000 | $ 58,000 | $ 78,525 | +16 % |
| 10,000 | $ 331,000 | $ 606,000 | +45 % |
| 25,000 | $ 418,000 | $ 1,266,000 | +65 % |
