Award-winning partnership: Securing craftsmanship knowledge with BlueSpice and AI

How can valuable experience in the skilled trades be preserved across generations? How can small and medium-sized companies secure their know-how – despite a shortage of skilled workers, generational change or staff turnover? The award-winning “WiBe-Back” project provides a forward-looking answer to this question – with a combination of artificial intelligence and the BlueSpice wiki software.

In close collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV and German bakery Möbius GmbH & Co. KG, we developed an intelligent knowledge management system that not only documents crucial specialist knowledge but also makes it available at any time with the aid of AI. The project won the Saxon Transfer Award in the category “Cooperation”. The Transfer Award recognizes projects in which research and companies collaborate successfully and apply knowledge in practice.

BlueSpice as a knowledge platform: practice meets research

The project focuses on the digitalization of traditional bakery knowledge. The Fraunhofer researchers analyzed all relevant processes directly in the bakery – from dough handling to oven temperature – and structured the knowledge together with the employees. The collected content was then incorporated into the BlueSpice wiki software. The platform functions not only as a knowledge repository, but also as a living working environment:

  • Simply structured forms enable continuous expansion by the qualified staff.
  • An AI-supported chatbot makes knowledge available to all employees at any time – without any prior technical knowledge.

Mathias Möbius, owner of bakery Möbius, emphasizes: “Good baked goods depend on many small details – from ingredients and temperatures to the experience of the individual. This knowledge is in the minds of my employees. Thanks to the collaboration with Fraunhofer and Hallo Welt!, we have now found a way to make this knowledge accessible to everyone – clearly structured, easy to understand and available at any time. A real milestone for us.”

Knowledge stays in the company – and continues to grow

Employees at the bakery were specifically trained in the practical implementation. This allows them to contribute and develop their specialist knowledge independently. The combination of structured documentation, intuitive software and AI support creates a learning system – a real innovative edge for the trade.

Prof. Jens Majschak, Director of the Fraunhofer IVV, emphasizes: “Our mission is to transfer technology solutions into practice. It is particularly exciting when solutions such as BlueSpice can be used across industries – wherever people work with machines. The knowledge stays in the company – and becomes a strategic resource.”

We at Hallo Welt! are proud to be part of this pioneering collaboration. The award of the Saxon Transfer Prize confirms this: BlueSpice is ready for the challenges of tomorrow – also in the skilled trades.
