Managing Office documents
SharePoint was yesterday: Connect file systems via WebDAV, manage file attachments and open and edit Office documents directly from the wiki.
What is WebDAV?
With WebDAV you can access files over a network, similarly to FTP/SFTP, SSH or SCP. Users can access their data just like an online hard drive, even entire directories can be transferred. Since the communication runs over HTTP/Port 80, firewalls rarely pose a problem.
Meanwhile, there are WebDAV solutions for every operating system — including smartphones — which allow WebDAV to be integrated into the system and accessed via the file manager.
Since user rights are also supported, WebDAV is a secure alternative to Samba or Windows shares, especially for remote access.
Advantages of a WebDAV connection
- Upload Office documents such as Word or Excel files to your wiki and open and edit them from within the wiki. Just click on the file name, and the document opens in the Office application.
- Save the files in the wiki without having to upload them again.
- Store documents and wiki pages in virtual folders in your file system and manage them in the file explorer. This allows you to edit wiki content with an external editor, quickly change structures, perform mass editing and deletions, or import articles automatically. All changes are versioned and logged.
